Meet the Artist Bill Adelman
"Adelman's medium is oil or acrylic painted in a
meticulous style, frequently requiring months of careful
application. I am reminded of the technical qualities of the
French surrealist painter Rene Magritte. The Adelman paintings are not
blatantly surrealistic as are Magritte's, but there is, nevertheless, a
subtle intensity in the consistently hard edge style that conveys a
haunting, dreamlike quality."

Works"
"The large blue vertical painting, "Cenote"
by William Adelman, is a 48" high acrylic work that attracts the
viewer through its harmony of light and dark blues with green, its soft
transition form edges and its simplified circular design. This
lyrical pure abstraction contrasts with much of the artist's usual
landscapes or hard-edge precisionist, and sometimes psychological,
studies that are more objective in a realist sense."

Art At Abstract Shows"

"William Adelman's acrylic painting, Nobska
Light, describes that familiar Cape landmark in a highly person,
precisely executed, coloristically refined and apparently objective
style. However, the artist's special and deliberately careful
perspective of those objects he has decided to include as well those
which have been left out or greatly simplified, becomes the strength and
subject focus of the painting, and through this subjectivity the
artist's vision presents and describes a timeless time, a surreal
silence."

Show Includes Works By Two Falmouth Artists"
"Adelman, whose exhibit "People and Their
Spaces" is on view through March 29 at Cape Cod Conservatory, Route
132, doesn't have the same strong interest in the urban
environment. But his paintings are similar to Hopper's in offering
an unromanticized view of 20th-century life in which the commonplace
seems a trifle bizarre.
In painting, "Loveland Pass, Elev. 11,700 Ft.,"
for example, the artist eschewed a straightforward landscape of this
Colorado Rocky Mountain high in favor of a scene of snow-covered peaks
as they might be viewed through the big front window of a bus by a
passenger. The driver's head and the rear view mirror block small
portions of the magnificent panorama.
Hopper used hard edges and harsh light and pared down
scenes to their essential elements to convey the lack of humanity in
modern society. Adelman's very realistic style goes even a step
beyond Hopper's in its dearth of detail and severity of line. But
then, the technological and architectural designs of today are even more
streamlined than they were during Hopper's lifetime."
