April 2008 Art Show
Paintings by Jean and Bill Adelman
Mort Maser Gallery, FCTV, Dillingham Ave., Falmouth

There are two main themes to these paintings. Jean's theme is SAND: DUNES and DESERTS.
Bill's theme is THE FOUR SEASONS: FALLING WATERS and RIVERS.

Two sets of paintings make up Jean's SAND. The first set depicts the dunes and sandy beaches of Cape Cod. The second set depicts desert vistas in Arizona, California, Colorado, and New Mexico visited by the artist. Many of these paintings were done on site; others were based on original sketches and on impressions derived from the artist's photos and montages.

Some of Jean's paintings are realistic; others are expressionistic and abstract. All feature a personal style and color palette. In the DESERT paintings mountains often are seen near the sands. In the DUNE series the ocean, marshes, bays and sounds are seen adjacent to the sands.

Two sets of paintings make up Bill's THE FOUR SEASONS. The first set of paintings are of waterfalls. Three of these paintings are of falls in New Hampshire. The fourth is of a fall over a dam on a coastal creek in Maine. The second set of paintings are of rivers. Two are of rivers in Vermont and two are of rivers in New Hampshire. Since all these paintings are of vistas in New England, the two series give Bill's impression of the visual joy of living in a four season environment. All of the acrylic paintings were done during the fall of 2007 while Bill was undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma.

Artists William & Jeana Adelman are painters in several media, including:
oil, acrylic, watercolor, casein and gouache.

About Artist Jean Mayo Adelman

Jean Mayo Adelman paints in plein air the many places she and her husband Bill visit on art trips. Paintings of Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont make up one group of her works. Scenes of Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado comprise another theme group. And another group of paintings are of Scotland and the Hebrides.

Jean Mayo Adelman signs her paintings “Jeana.” She is a painter in several media. She is best known for her acrylics, watercolors, and pastels. In 2004 she won the “Best in Show Award” for her expressionist painting of an Arizona vista, and in 2005 juror Paul Resika awarded her Best in Show for her oil “Storm Warning.” Sam Barber awarded her the Best Oil or Acrylic Prize for her semi-abstract acrylic of Redbrook Harbor in Bourne on Cape Cod.

She has been President of the Falmouth Artists’ Guild twice, and for many years was an active board member. She founded the Falmouth Arts Alive Festival and was Chair of the festival for two years. She studied painting with Claude Croney, Bill Regan, Hillary Osborn, Diana Lee, and Edith Bruce, and drawing with Clifford Stubbs.

She is a long time member of the Woods Hole Woman’s Club and has served as its President. For many years she was on the Board of the Woods Hole Children’s School of Science. She has been active in many community theater groups. In Maryland, she performed with Cedar Lane Stage and was its President for several years. She has been active in the Falmouth Theater Guild and the Woods Hole Theater Company as actor, assistant director and board member. Recent performances were in Thornton Wilder’s “Infancy” and James Thurber’s “Thurber Carnival.”
Before painting became her main endeavor, she was a Navy WAVE, a dietician in several hospitals, and a mother of three.

A native Vermonter and a graduate of the University of Vermont, she had at one time her own television show, demonstrating healthful recipes for the American Red Cross. She remains active in the arts and is an active plein air painter whenever the weather permits.
